An only in Melbourne story: roving community radio station, champion of new talent, local and global, finds permanent digs and turns into popping bar. Part of Melbourne’s newest arts precinct, Collingwood Yards, a long ago technical school campus, Hope Street Radio now occupies the old metal workshop. But forget post-industrial angst, it’s all warm wood and a sunny welcome here. Community DJs broadcast while regulars sip natural wines and snack on focaccia, oysters or authentically sauced, handmade pasta. Anyone who was knocking around St.Kilda in the 1980s or 90s, will have a story or two about this historic pub, aka the Espy, a Victorian-era seaside pleasure palace turned grunge den and music venue. The sticky carpet was finally ripped up a few years ago and the crowd may look squeaky clean compared to the bad old days, but there’s still live music in the basement most nights, not to mention twelve, yes, twelve bars. This includes a cocktail bar, the Ghost of Alfred Felton, on the never before open to the public fifth floor.
