My initial acquaintance with Norwich during my school days did not leave a lasting impression. Hopping off the bus and making my way through the city's walled core, I was more preoccupied with nursing my Coke float from Valori's well-loved fish and chip shop, now converted into a tattoo parlour, than appreciating the stunning architecture of the city’s prized 11th-century cathedral, boasting the second tallest spire in England. As a young punk enthusiast, I paid little heed to the well-loved department store, Bonds, or indulging in afternoon tea and scones with my mother at the grand pillar-laden Assembly House. However, I did find solace and a strange sense of belonging in transforming into my alter ego in a humble restroom at Brambles tearoom and submerging myself in the underbelly of Magdalen Street's more opulent social scene. I became a frequent visitor of The Jacquard nightclub and the local taverns, The Murderers and Wild Man. The famous Ferry Boat Inn was our Sunday night getaway, filled with Fag Ash Lil's honky-tonk tunes, while the historic Norwich Market served as our weekday haunt. We gathered under the striped awning of this ancient market, which has been a commercial hub for over a millennium, nursing our ciders and enjoying a shared sense of unspoken rebellion. Now, as a university professor, I find myself revisiting Norwich with a fresh perspective. What was once viewed through the narrative of a punk-obsessed teenager is now appreciated with an understanding for the city's rich history and charm. Once again, Norwich has claimed a piece of me.

As the warmth of the sun kisses the cobblestones and the aroma of wisteria descends from the castle hill, Norwich's remarkable architectural heritage seems to come alive. From the flamboyance of John Skipper's Royal Arcade to the elegant simplicity of City Hall's Art Deco design, and onto the 1978 modernist masterpiece of the Norman Foster-designed Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, there is an abundance of visual treats. Historically, Norwich has been an inspirational cradle for creativity. In the 19th Century, John Crome and John Sell Cotman, both figureheads of landscape art, established Britain's first provincial art movement here in 1803, known as the Norwich School.

Norfolk is now home to renowned sculptor Antony Gormley, and Richard Long is preparing for a potentially groundbreaking exhibition at Houghton Hall next summer. The city's rich tapestry includes a vibrant literary scene, with the University of East Anglia's renowned creative-writing programme boasting both Rose Tremain on its teaching staff and notable alumni that include Kazuo Ishiguro and Ian McEwan. This creative legacy solidified Norwich as England's first UNESCO City of Literature.

The medieval Dragon Hall, one of Norwich's oldest surviving structures, is now host to the Writers' Centre, supporting various literary events and artistic endeavours all year round. The city is also known for its unique use of space, with several old churches creatively repurposed as art venues. The diverse Capsule Arts Festival, which often introduces acts that eventually progress to the renowned Edinburgh Fringe, is another cultural highlight.

Strolling through Norwich, the streets are adorned with art framers, shops offering handcrafted jewellery, independent coffee shops and a throwback guitar shop reminiscent of Wayne's World. As I pause, soaking in the city's charming character, I then realise I have been inescapably entwined in a love affair with Norwich.

SHOPPING IN NORWICH

Barista at The Workshop Caf

Nestled away, you'll find Verandah, a charming boutique showcasing a range of works from a group artfully curated by printmaker Vanessa Burroughs. You'll find unique items ranging from Marilyn Thomas's bespoke Fair Isle felt cardigans, Annabel Grey's highly crafted oil cloths perfect for jazzing up your kitchen table, to Jemima Pine's exquisitely crafted silver jewellery. What sets this shop apart is the artists themselves taking turns to attend the store, promising intriguing chats and the potential for ordering a custom-made piece. Established within a beautiful, historic church is St Gregory's Antiques and Collectibles. This place is a treasure trove of antiquities and interesting knick-knacks, with items like a miniature model biplane overtly displayed on the supports, an extensive selection of retro vinyl, and even a unique pair of crocodile-skin shoes. It's not just about what's on sale but the immersive retail experience, whether that be examining a vintage seat at the once-sacred altar or exploring a side-chapel to feel the touch of a luxurious fur coat. My expedition concluded with the acquisition of a substantial earthenware pot and a divinely decorated alpine table. For lovers of nostalgic design with a modern twist, the Stubenhocker boasts a collection of revitalised antique furniture adorned with vibrant and cozy knitted throws.

GOURMET ADVENTURES IN NORWICH

Years ago, the dining high point after a late-night round at the local was a juicy burger from a charming joint known as Zak's, nestled beneath the castle on the hill. Fast forward to the present and Norwich's culinary scene has evolved to offer you an assortment of more refined options. For instance, the renowned Benedicts' kitchen is steered by the exceptional chef Richard Bainbridge, who showcases his artistry through local and seasonal produce ranging from Cromer crab, Norfolk lamb to North Sea cod. A pioneer in his craft, Chef Bainbridge was Margaret Thatcher’s personal chef at 10 Downing Street in the early 90s.

Adding to this feast of flavors is East Twenty-Six, huddled within a monumental building flaunting a glass facade on Exchange Street. This restaurant is a portal to the exquisite taste of North Africa and the Middle East, serving modern tapas dishes such as delicious cauliflower shawarma accompanied with caramelised onions and scrumptiously unique Yemeni-style falafel. Interestingly, East Twenty-Six, in its formative years, was a humble but highly rated food truck around the city.

For an intriguing cocktail and popover combo set in a quaint courtyard with some live tunes, schedule your stay in Norwich with an evening at Frank's. Sourdough aficionados and coffee enthusiasts are catered for at Louis' Deli on Upper St Giles, where freshly baked loaves from Pye Baker, and aromatic caffeine creations from Bury St Edmunds' prized grinder, Butterworth & Son, are yours for the taking. Who knew you could have a spontaneous Italian, French or German conversation while enjoying your cup of joe?

The Workshop, an artsy, bourgeois bohemian joint, offers homemade pizzas and fiery chilli hot chocolates that draw in students for some intellectual graffiti on the bathroom walls. Rounding off this diverse line-up is The Birdcage, where the Art Deco aesthetic is accentuated by ever-changing art exhibitions and open-mic nights. Catering to an edgy, hipster clientele, its intimate garden becomes a barefoot dance floor upon dusk.

It's worth mentioning that The Birdcage has recently been voted as Norwich's best bar for music, and The Workshop introduces a new special pizza variety each month, serving to keep customers curious and coming back for more.
